What to Expect at Your First Yoga or Pilates Class: A Beginner's Guide
Walking into your first yoga or Pilates class shouldn't feel like stepping into the unknown. At the Yoga Center of Columbia, we've spent over three decades helping beginners start their wellness journey with confidence. Here's everything you need to know to make your first class a comfortable, positive experience.
What Our Students Say
"The teachers — every one is amazing; so warm, encouraging, knowledgeable. The atmosphere— so friendly, inviting. The schedule— so easy to find the perfect class." - SC.
"I love how the instructors cater to the needs of each student. They are careful to give alternative moves to students that are being careful of their backs, joints, or other areas." - CF.
Before You Arrive
What to Wear:
Comfortable, stretchy clothing that allows you to move freely
Layers are recommended, as your body temperature may change during class
No special footwear needed – classes are practiced barefoot. You may choose to wear traction socks.
What to Bring:
Water bottle (we have a convenient filling station)
Your own mat, yoga strap and props if you have them (if not, we provide clean mats for your use in-studio)
An open mind and positive attitude!
Arriving at the Studio
Plan to arrive 10 minutes before class starts. This gives you time to:
Check at the front desk which studio your class is in
Get oriented to the space
Set up your mat and any props you'll need
Meet your instructor and mention any injuries or concerns
During Class
You're in Good Hands: Our experienced instructors (many with 20-30+ years of teaching experience) specialize in making classes accessible for everyone. Here's what you can expect:
Clear, detailed instructions
Multiple variations of poses/exercises offered for different ability levels
Props and modifications readily available
A supportive, non-competitive atmosphere
As one of our students, Susan L., puts it: "Fabulous studio with experienced, caring, and just fun-to-be-around teachers. Great atmosphere! I always feel uplifted, both physically and mentally, after a class!"
Remember:
Go at your own pace
Take breaks whenever needed
Ask questions – that's what our instructors are here for!
There's no such thing as being "bad at yoga" or Pilates
After Class
One of our unique features is our 15-minute transition time between classes. This means:
No rushing out the door. Bask in post-class endorphins!
Time to ask your instructor questions
Opportunity to get personalized tips and modifications
A chance to connect with other students
