M.Ed, E-RYT 500, Accessible Yoga Teacher, Y4A Yoga for Amputees Master Teacher, Level 1 WAE Teacher

What is your favorite part of being part of the YCC family?
The sense of community is strong and sustainable! I’ve found life long friendships through YCC. The YCC family is loving, supportive and diverse, it’s a wonderful family to be a part of.

Besides teaching yoga, how do you spend your time?
I’m Co-Director of the adaptive yoga program, Y4A Yoga for Amputees. When I’m not teaching weekly yoga classes, the remainder of my time is committed to doing work for that program with fellow YCC teacher, Lucy Lomax. We offer a weekly yoga class for amputees, training and professional development for yoga teachers and health professionals who support amputees, and provide in-person clinics for organizations that support those with limb loss/limb variance. I also love kayaking, growing veggies in the garden, reading, cooking, walking my dog near the creek behind my home, snuggling with my cat and spending time with family and friends.

What to expect in class: Heather's classes are mindfully structured, blending asana, sequenced movement, breathing techniques and meditation, and she is passionate about making yoga accessible and enjoyable to anyone who wants to do yoga. Through study and work with the Y4A Yoga for Amputees program, Heather has acquired skills and techniques to accommodate those with a limb issue/variance and is eager to share what she's learned with students and other teachers.

Heather has been teaching yoga for more than 18 years, and at the Yoga Center of Columbia for more than 14 years! Prior to becoming a yoga teacher, Heather was actively working with and advocating for children and adults with cognitive and physical disabilities across a variety of settings. Heather has taught classes for all ages, specializing in yoga for older populations, those affected by cancer, limb loss/difference, and chronic conditions. Heather serves as Co-Director of the Y4A Yoga for Amputees program, an international, adaptive yoga program for those with limb loss/limb difference/limb limitation.
